Leif Erikson Day marks the anniversary of the first European to set foot on North American soil 500 years prior to Christopher Columbus. He was born in Iceland, which at the time was a colony of Norway.
Erikson was a Viking. He converted from paganism to Christianity in 999AD and was tasked with converting the people of Greenland, which he also discovered, to Christianity by the King of Norway. On a trip, his boat was blown off course and settled off the coast of Newfoundland; he did not set foot at this time. He return October 9, 1001 AD. Today we honor this fearless explorer.
